# Bitcoin holds up after a $6.3 billion theft at Binance, while crypto shares fall

Causa Cause File. Bitcoin −1.31% to about $76,758. Monday 2 November 2026, Before the US open, 06:00 GMT, with Friday’s closes.

## Why did bitcoin fall on Friday 30 October 2026?

Binance said about $6.3 billion had been stolen from it, the largest crypto theft on record, in an attack linked to North Korea. Bitcoin fell about 5% as the news broke and ended Friday near $76,758, while Coinbase fell 10.6%. By Sunday Binance had replaced about 95% of the assets and begun reopening withdrawals.

## Transmission chain

1. Binance discloses a theft: $6.3 billion, linked to North Korea by TRM.
2. Exchange risk repriced: Coinbase −10.6%, Strategy −7.8%.
3. Tech selling adds pressure: Nasdaq −2.9% the same day.
4. Bitcoin −1.31%: About $76,758 near the US close.

## The evidence

**Reported.** Binance said about $6.3 billion in crypto was stolen after a hacker gained access through an engineer’s compromised laptop, and it suspended deposits and withdrawals on Thursday. TRM assessed with high confidence that North Korea’s TraderTraitor unit carried out the attack. The previous record was the $1.5 billion theft from Bybit in 2025. **Reported.** TRM counted 18,270 bitcoin among the stolen assets, worth about $1.47 billion, along with ether, stablecoins, XRP and solana. About $3 billion, mostly stablecoins, has been frozen. On Sunday Binance said it had replaced about 95% of the affected assets from company funds, including its emergency reserve, and began reopening withdrawals in phases, starting with bitcoin and ether. **Observed.** Bitcoin was near $76,758 at Friday’s US close, down 1.31%, and ether near $2,237. Coinbase fell 10.62%, Robinhood 7.21% and Strategy 7.84%, and Capp Notes reported more than $1.5 billion of ether futures liquidations after the theft. (Sources: [Capp Notes](https://cappnotes.substack.com/p/closing-look-friday-october-30-2026))

**Our read.** Our read is that the theft hit confidence in exchanges and crypto shares harder than the price of bitcoin. Coinbase fell eight times as far as bitcoin on Friday, and by Sunday Binance had covered about 95% of the losses from its own funds. The part of the fall that did reach bitcoin came as tech stocks sold off, and the two cannot be cleanly separated on one session. (Sources: [Capp Notes](https://cappnotes.substack.com/p/closing-look-friday-october-30-2026), [CoinDesk](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/11/01/binance-opens-crypto-withdrawals-in-phases-starting-with-bitcoin-following-usd6-3-billion-hack))

**Desk note.** Binance has promised a detailed technical review and a full proof of reserves. The remaining 5% of the affected assets are less liquid tokens it is still buying back. (Sources: [Al Jazeera](https://aljazeera.com/economy/2026/10/30/binance-says-2-54bn-in-crypto-funds-frozen-amid-potential-security-issue), [CoinDesk](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/11/01/binance-opens-crypto-withdrawals-in-phases-starting-with-bitcoin-following-usd6-3-billion-hack))

This is not a judgement on Binance’s security or solvency. The exchange has promised a full review, and its account of the theft may change as investigators report.

## Other explanations we weighed

- **The tech selloff, not the theft, moved bitcoin** (still live). Bitcoin and the Nasdaq fell on the same day, and the wider rout may account for much of bitcoin’s loss. This is part of our read; one session cannot separate the two causes. (Sources: [Capp Notes](https://cappnotes.substack.com/p/closing-look-friday-october-30-2026))
- **Fear that the stolen coins will be sold** (still live). The attackers hold 18,270 bitcoin, worth about $1.47 billion, that could be sold over time. Binance’s replacement of the assets from its own funds removes the risk of a forced sale by the exchange, but not by the attackers. ## Evidence grade: C

The theft and the tech selloff hit within the same day, so their effects on bitcoin cannot be separated with confidence. Binance’s quick replacement of the assets fits our read, but the record is only a few days long.

## What would prove us wrong

Our read is that the theft did more damage to crypto shares than to bitcoin itself. If bitcoin closes below $74,000 on a day the Nasdaq closes above 25,800, by 13 November, bitcoin is falling on crypto’s own troubles while tech recovers, and this file is wrong.

- Test: F-022, Bitcoin closes below $74,000, and on the same session Nasdaq closes above 25,800
- Deadline: 13 November 2026
- Status: Open until 13 November 2026
