# Brent rises as mines hit tankers near Hormuz and diplomacy stalls

Causa Cause File. Brent crude +2.37% to $113.43. Monday 2 November 2026, Before the US open, 06:00 GMT, with Friday’s closes.

## Why did Brent crude rise on Friday 30 October 2026?

Brent’s January contract rose 2.37% after explosive devices damaged tankers near the Strait of Hormuz and Iran reported more ships hitting mines. On Saturday President Trump said the US still had to deal with one or two sites in Iran, while Iran said a plan mediated by Qatar could reopen the Strait within two days if Washington meets its conditions.

## Transmission chain

1. Mines hit tankers near Hormuz: Fires on board; Oman rescues 25 crew.
2. Shipping risk repriced: Just over 30 attacks in October.
3. Escalation priced: Talks stall before the US vote.
4. Brent +2.37%: $113.43, January contract.

## The evidence

**Observed.** Brent’s January contract settled up 2.37% at $113.43, and US crude rose 2.08% to $104.12. The December contract expired at $117.64, its highest close of the month. **Reported.** Britain’s maritime security agency said a tanker in the Strait was damaged by explosive devices attached from a small boat. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said a supertanker carrying more than 2 million barrels struck a mine and caught fire, and Oman evacuated 25 crew from a Panama-flagged tanker off Musandam. Capp Notes described it as the first successful limpet-mine strike since the war began. **Reported.** Saul Kavonic of MST Marquee said continued attacks around Hormuz and doubts about diplomacy were keeping prices high in expectation of escalation in the coming weeks. On Saturday President Trump said the US still had to “take care of” one or two sites in Iran, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio said no decision on new strikes had been made. **Reported.** Iran’s foreign minister said a proposal mediated by Qatar could reopen the Strait within two days if Washington accepts Tehran’s conditions, and Gulf officials are waiting for the US reply. Qatar said on Sunday that one of its LNG carriers was attacked on Friday evening. **Our read.** Our read is that Friday’s rise priced the risk of moving oil through the Strait, as attacks on ships multiplied and diplomacy stalled. With the US vote on Tuesday and talk of new strikes, the premium now has two parts: the attacks under way, and the chance of a second round of war after the vote. A deal to reopen the Strait would remove most of both. **Desk note.** Our Brent calls are now ruled on the January contract, with each open line moved down by $4.21, the gap between the two contracts at expiry. F-006 now fails below $103.79, and the Brent conditions in F-008 and F-015 sit at $107.79 and $105.79. The call below is written on the January contract. This is not a forecast that the war will resume. It is a reading of what the price already assumes.

## Other explanations we weighed

- **Lost production, not shipping risk, lifted prices** (weaker). Friday’s reports were of attacks on ships, damaged cargoes and evacuated crews, not of halted production in the Gulf. (Sources: [Reuters, via ARY News](https://arynews.tv/oil-set-for-fourth-monthly-gain-as-hormuz-tanker-attack-highlights-supply-risks-from-war), [CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/iran-war-us-trump-diplomacy-threat-resume-attacks/))
- **Positioning around the December expiry** (still live). December Brent expired on Friday, and expiry days can move prices as positions roll. But the January contract, which did not expire, rose 2.37% as well, which points to the news rather than the calendar. (Sources: [Capp Notes](https://cappnotes.substack.com/p/closing-look-friday-october-30-2026), [FinanceFeeds](https://financefeeds.com/brent-crude-oil-price-113-saturday-week-ahead-after-october-13-6-percent-gain-hormuz-mines-midterms-jobs-report-bull-120-bear-106/))

## Evidence grade: B

The attacks and the move came on the same day, and analysts tied the price to the risk of escalation. The weekend comments on strikes came after the close and cannot have caused Friday’s move.

## What would prove us wrong

Our read is that Brent’s premium rests on attacks on shipping and the risk of renewed war after Tuesday’s vote. If the January contract settles below $110, under Thursday’s settlement of $110.80, on any session to 13 November while no deal to reopen the Strait has been announced, the market is not pricing that risk and this file is wrong.

- Test: F-021, resolved by an editor on: An official ICE Brent January 2027 settlement below $110 on any session to 13 November, with no announced US and Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on that date.
- Deadline: 13 November 2026
- Status: Open until 13 November 2026
