# Gold falls 1.9% in a risk-off session

Causa Cause File. Gold −1.9% to $4,062. Thursday 22 October 2026, Intraday, 11:00 New York.

## Why did gold fall on Thursday 22 October 2026?

Gold fell despite a risk-off session that would normally support it. Our best explanation is the rate path: gold pays no yield while the Fed is still raising. The evidence is weak, and the file is graded C.

## Transmission chain

1. Fed still in hiking mode: September hike. December hike priced.
2. Oil adds to inflation fear: More hikes stay on the table.
3. Yield-free gold loses ground: The 10-year has held above 5% for weeks. The dollar is firm near 101.6.
4. Gold −1.9%: To $4,062 at 10:54 New York.

## The evidence

**Observed.** Gold was at $4,062.30 an ounce at 10:54 New York time, down $78 on the day. It has fallen about 4.8% over the past month and sits well below its January record of $5,608. **Our read.** The rate explanation runs as follows. The Fed is in a hiking cycle, the 10-year yield has spent weeks above 5%, and the dollar index is firm near 101.6. Gold pays no yield, so every expected hike raises the cost of holding it. Oil at $111 strengthens the case for further hikes. **Our read.** The session itself argues against it. The 10-year yield fell about 8 basis points, which should have supported gold. A second explanation is forced selling, where investors sell profitable positions to cover losses in stocks and crypto. The available reporting does not confirm it. (Sources: [Investing.com](https://www.investing.com/rates-bonds/u.s.-10-year-bond-yield-historical-data), [CNBC Investing Club](https://www.cnbc.com/investingclub/2026/10/22/our-top-10-things-to-watch-in-the-stock-market-thursday.html))

This is not a collapse in demand for gold as a haven. One day of selling during a shock says little about long-term buying.

## Evidence grade: C

The leading explanation conflicts with Thursday's fall in yields. We publish it because it is the best available, and we say how it could fail.

## What would prove us wrong

If gold closes below $4,000 on a day when the 10-year yield closes below 5.00%, falling rates are not rescuing it, and the rate explanation fails. Deadline 6 November.

- Test: F-004, Gold closes below $4,000, and on the same session US 10-year closes below 5.00%
- Deadline: 6 November 2026
- Status: Open until 6 November 2026. Reopened on 27 October. We first ruled this call triggered using a market quote of 4.988% for the 10-year yield. Our declared source, the US Treasury daily yield, was 5.00% on 23 October, which is not below the line. See the corrections log.
