# Intel’s cash warning sinks the chipmakers and pulls the Nasdaq to a three-month low

Causa Cause File. Nasdaq Composite −2.86% to 25,437.00. Monday 2 November 2026, Before the US open, 06:00 GMT, with Friday’s closes.

## Why did the Nasdaq Composite fall on Friday 30 October 2026?

Intel fell 28.6%, its worst day on record, after forecasting a cash outflow for the year, and the chip index lost 7.2%. Amazon fell 1.4% on its own cash outflow. The selling was concentrated in the companies spending most on AI and their suppliers, while consumer staples and healthcare rose.

## Transmission chain

1. Intel forecasts a cash outflow: Guidance of 25 cents a share against 43 expected.
2. Chipmakers repriced: Chip index −7.2%; AMD −10.9%, Nvidia −4.2%.
3. AI spenders sold, defensives bought: Staples and healthcare higher by midday.
4. Nasdaq −2.86%: 25,437.00 at the close.

## The evidence

**Observed.** The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.86% to 25,437.00 and the Philadelphia semiconductor index 7.20%. Intel dropped 28.58%, AMD 10.88%, Qualcomm 11.12%, Broadcom 5.48%, Micron 5.30% and Nvidia 4.22%, while the server makers Dell and HP lost 10.77% and 9.58%. The S&P 500 fell 1.82% and the Russell 2000 1.66%. (Sources: [Capp Notes](https://cappnotes.substack.com/p/closing-look-friday-october-30-2026))

**Reported.** Intel guided to fourth-quarter earnings of 25 cents a share, against 43 cents expected, and said it expects to burn cash this year because of a weak PC market, manufacturing problems and heavy spending on new production. Reuters called it the stock’s steepest one-day fall on record, and D.A. Davidson cut its rating to neutral. **Reported.** Amazon fell 1.41% after reporting a twelve-month free cash outflow of $42.4 billion and keeping its $220 billion spending plan for 2026. Reuters reported that it signalled another rise in spending next year, and that markets expect the Fed to raise rates by more than 50 basis points by mid-2027, which makes debt-funded AI spending harder to justify. **Observed.** The selling was concentrated. By midday consumer staples were up 1.6% and healthcare had reached a record high, and Exxon Mobil and Chevron rose after beating profit estimates. The 10-year Treasury yield fell 4 basis points to 4.94%. **Our read.** Our read is that Friday carried Thursday’s test from the cloud builders to the chipmakers. Investors are pricing AI companies on whether cash flow covers the build: Intel failed that test outright, Amazon confirmed its outflow, and the suppliers fell with them as the market questioned how long the spending can run. A broad growth scare would have taken defensive stocks down as well; staples and healthcare rose instead. **Desk note.** F-014 and F-012 both failed on this close: the Nasdaq finished below 26,000 and 25,800 with the 10-year yield at 4.94%. F-018 holds for now, with Amazon below its pre-results close of $243.79. This is not a call that demand for AI computing is falling. Amazon’s cloud growth accelerated in its latest quarter; the selling is about cost, cash and how long the build lasts.

## Other explanations we weighed

- **Hawkish Fed comments drove the selling** (still live). Fed presidents Alberto Musalem and Lorie Logan both called for higher rates, Logan for at least two more quarter-point rises, and futures put a December rise at about 76%. But the 10-year yield fell 4 basis points on the day, and the heaviest losses were in companies with results of their own. (Sources: [Capp Notes](https://cappnotes.substack.com/p/closing-look-friday-october-30-2026))
- **Money rotating out of technology on its own** (still live). Angelo Kourkafas of Edward Jones put the rotation down to above-trend growth and improving earnings in sectors that had lagged. That explains where the money went, but not why it left the chipmakers on the day Intel reported. - **A broad slowdown scare** (weaker). The Chicago PMI fell to 55.3 from 58.8, below forecasts, but it remains in expansion and labour costs rose 0.8% in the quarter. Defensive sectors gained on Friday, which a growth scare would not produce. ## Evidence grade: B

Intel’s fall follows directly from its guidance, and Reuters ties the wider selling to Amazon and Intel. Two Fed officials also called for higher rates the same day, so AI spending is not the only cause.

## What would prove us wrong

Our read is that Friday’s selling was a verdict on how AI is paid for, confined to the spenders and their suppliers, not a broad growth scare. If the S&P 500 closes below 7,400 on a day the 10-year yield closes below 4.80%, by 13 November, the selling has become a growth scare and this file is wrong.

- Test: F-019, S&P 500 closes below 7,400, and on the same session US 10-year closes below 4.80%
- Deadline: 13 November 2026
- Status: Open until 13 November 2026
