# Meta falls 6% on higher spending guidance despite a beat

Causa Cause File. Nasdaq Composite −2.2% to 26,108. Thursday 22 October 2026, Intraday, 11:00 New York.

## Why did the Nasdaq Composite fall on Thursday 22 October 2026?

Meta beat on revenue and earnings but fell more than 6% after raising the low end of its capital spending range and guiding to much higher investment in 2027. With chips weak and oil rising, the Nasdaq more than reversed Wednesday’s gain.

## Transmission chain

1. Meta beats, then raises its spending floor: Revenue $64.6bn against $63.4bn expected. Bigger investment ahead in 2027.
2. Investors question the return on AI spending: A new non-voting share class hints at future funding needs.
3. Mega-caps and chip stocks sell off: Lam Research also fell after earnings. Tesla swung after cutting capex.
4. Nasdaq −2.2%: Reverses Wednesday's 1.05% gain.

## The evidence

**Reported.** Meta reported earnings of $7.40 a share on revenue of $64.6 billion, against expectations of $5.74 and $63.37 billion. Revenue grew 26% and the fourth-quarter outlook was stronger than expected. **Reported.** The pressure came from spending guidance. Meta raised the low end of its 2026 capital spending range and said investment will rise sharply in 2027. It also created a new class of non-voting stock, a possible route to future fundraising. A small after-hours gain turned into a drop of more than 6% by late morning. **Reported.** Tesla cut spending and still traded lower. It beat on earnings, produced $1.53 billion of free cash flow and cut its 2026 capital spending plan to about $20 billion from $25 billion, while pointing to heavier spending in 2027 and 2028 on Optimus robots and Cybercab. The shares swung between a 5% premarket loss and roughly flat. **Observed.** Chip stocks led the decline, Lam Research among them, and oil at a five-month high added to the pressure. The Nasdaq Composite fell about 2.2% to 26,108 by late morning, more than reversing Wednesday’s 1.05% rise. This is not a verdict on Meta’s operating results, which were strong. The market is pricing the cost of competing in AI, a question that returns with each large tech report this season.

## Evidence grade: B

Meta's spending plans are the main reported cause, but oil and chip weakness overlap on the same morning, so we cannot isolate how much each contributed.

## What would prove us wrong

If the Nasdaq Composite closes back above Wednesday's 26,702.86 by 30 October while Brent is still above $108, the drop was a one-session flush rather than a lasting verdict on AI spending.

- Test: F-002, Nasdaq closes above 26,702.86, and on the same session Brent closes above $108.00
- Deadline: 30 October 2026
- Status: Held to 30 October 2026
