# Brent tops $116 on reports of planned strikes on Iran

Causa Cause File. Brent crude +3.0% to $116.57. Friday 23 October 2026, Intraday, 15:30 New York.

## Why did Brent crude rise on Friday 23 October 2026?

Brent rose for a third straight week on reports that the US and Israel are weighing new strikes on Iran after the US midterms. No supply has been lost; the move is a premium for the risk of a wider war.

## Transmission chain

1. Reports of US strikes on Iran after the midterms: Several outlets reported the planning on Thursday and Friday.
2. Saudi energy sites stay in range: Houthis claimed attacks on Yanbu. Wednesday's Shaybah strike killed two workers.
3. The war premium widens: Gulf exports are close to prewar levels, so this is risk, not shortage.
4. Brent +3.0%: December contract settled at $116.72.

## The evidence

**Observed.** December Brent settled at $116.72 a barrel on Friday, a six-month high, and US crude closed just above $103. Investing.com's record shows Brent at $116.57 in later trading, up 3.0% on the day after a 4.0% rise to $113.17 on Thursday. From last Friday's close of $109.86, that is a rise of about 6%, and Trading Economics counts it as the third weekly gain in a row. **Reported.** Friday's push came from reports that the US and Israel are considering further strikes on Iran after the early November midterm elections. TheStreet, Trading Economics and Yahoo Finance all tied the rise to that reporting. (Sources: [TheStreet](https://www.thestreet.com/stock-market-today/stock-market-today-dow-jones-sp-500-nasdaq-updates-oct-23-2026), [Trading Economics](https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/brent-crude-oil), [Yahoo Finance](https://finance.yahoo.com/personal-finance/investing/article/gold-price-today-friday-october-23-2026-gold-opens-at-3-month-lows-as-oil-prices-keep-rising-111248003.html))

**Reported.** The attacks behind Thursday’s rise continued. Houthi forces claimed responsibility for strikes on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea port of Yanbu, following Wednesday’s deadly drone strike near the Shaybah oilfield. (Sources: [Trading Economics](https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/brent-crude-oil), [Coinpaper](https://coinpaper.com/37781/stock-market-today-s-and-p-500-dji-fall-after-ai-selloff-as-oil-surges-toward-115))

**Our read.** There is no shortage. Trading Economics notes that crude exports from the Gulf have recovered close to prewar levels. The price is rising on the risk of losing supply, and the cost is already reaching fuel-intensive companies: United, Delta and American each fell more than 4%. (Sources: [Trading Economics](https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/brent-crude-oil), [Yahoo Finance](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/live/stock-market-today-friday-october-23-dow-sp-500-nasdaq-tesla-meta-093000521.html))

This is not a supply shortage. Gulf exports are near prewar levels, and Saudi output was unaffected by this week's attacks.

## Evidence grade: A

Several independent outlets tie the move to the same reports, and the timing fits. How much of the price is premium rather than fundamentals is our judgment.

## What would prove us wrong

Our read is that oil now prices a wider war, not a passing scare. If Brent closes below $108, where it traded before Wednesday's Shaybah strike, on any session by 6 November, the market has judged the escalation risk overdone and this file overstated it.

- Test: F-006, Brent closes below $108.00
- Deadline: 6 November 2026
- Status: Open until 6 November 2026
