# Shaybah attack lifts Brent as Meta’s spending plans hit the Nasdaq.

Causa, Edition 001. Thursday 22 October 2026. Intraday, 11:00 New York.

A drone attack near Saudi Arabia’s Shaybah oilfield took Brent to a five-month high, and Meta’s spending guidance hit tech. Bitcoin and gold also fell; the evidence for those two links is weaker.

## What moved markets on Thursday 22 October 2026, and why

Brent rose about 2.7% to near $111.80 after Saudi air defences shot down a drone aimed at a processing plant at Shaybah; falling debris killed two contract workers. The Energy Ministry said output was unaffected. In New York, Meta fell more than 6% despite beating forecasts, as investors focused on its higher spending plans for AI. The Nasdaq Composite was down about 2.2% by late morning. Bitcoin and gold also fell. The link from oil to bitcoin is well reported; the gold move is harder to explain and is graded accordingly. Each file states the condition that would invalidate it, with a deadline, and the Scorecard tests it against closing prices. ## Cause Files

### [Brent prices Saudi supply risk after the Shaybah drone attack](https://causamarkets.com/cause/brent-shaybah-risk-premium/)

Brent crude +2.7% to $111.77. Evidence grade A.

Brent rose to a five-month high after a drone aimed at Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah field was intercepted and its debris killed two workers. No output was lost. The move is a risk premium on the chance that a future strike stops production.

Wrong if: Our read is that Thursday's rise is fear, not lost supply. If Saudi Arabia or Aramco reports a production loss at Shaybah or any other field from these attacks by 6 November, the cause was physical and this file is wrong. (F-001, deadline 6 November 2026)

### [Meta falls 6% on higher spending guidance despite a beat](https://causamarkets.com/cause/meta-ai-spending-nasdaq/)

Nasdaq Composite −2.2% to 26,108. Evidence grade B.

Meta beat on revenue and earnings but fell more than 6% after raising the low end of its capital spending range and guiding to much higher investment in 2027. With chips weak and oil rising, the Nasdaq more than reversed Wednesday’s gain.

Wrong if: If the Nasdaq Composite closes back above Wednesday's 26,702.86 by 30 October while Brent is still above $108, the drop was a one-session flush rather than a lasting verdict on AI spending. (F-002, deadline 30 October 2026)

### [Bitcoin reverses from a two-week high as Brent tops $111](https://causamarkets.com/cause/bitcoin-gives-back-bounce/)

Bitcoin −3.4% to $81,618. Evidence grade B.

Bitcoin opened at its highest level since 7 October and fell more than 3% as Brent rose above $111. The reported channel runs from oil to inflation expectations to Fed pricing, which weighs on risk assets.

Wrong if: If bitcoin closes above $84,000 by 29 October while Brent is still above $108, oil is not what is holding crypto down. (F-003, deadline 29 October 2026)

### [Gold falls 1.9% in a risk-off session](https://causamarkets.com/cause/gold-falls-in-risk-off-session/)

Gold −1.9% to $4,062. Evidence grade C.

Gold fell despite a risk-off session that would normally support it. Our best explanation is the rate path: gold pays no yield while the Fed is still raising. The evidence is weak, and the file is graded C.

Wrong if: If gold closes below $4,000 on a day when the 10-year yield closes below 5.00%, falling rates are not rescuing it, and the rate explanation fails. Deadline 6 November. (F-004, deadline 6 November 2026)

### [Treasuries catch a bid while oil climbs](https://causamarkets.com/cause/treasuries-catch-a-bid/)

US 10-year yield −8 bp to 5.07%. Evidence grade B.

Higher oil usually lifts yields through inflation expectations. On Thursday, haven demand from the equity selloff dominated and Treasuries rallied. The Fed meets next week and is expected to hold.

Wrong if: If the 10-year yield closes above 5.15% by 30 October while Brent is still above $110, inflation fear is back in charge and Thursday's haven move was a one-day effect. (F-005, deadline 30 October 2026)

## What we are watching

- 27 and 28 October, Federal Reserve meeting: Markets expect a hold, with a hike priced for 9 December. Any hint of an earlier move would hit bitcoin, gold and tech together.
- This week, Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia: Attacks have spread from energy sites to airports, and the US is preparing to move some embassy staff out of the Gulf. A strike that stops output would turn a premium into a shortage.
- Rest of October, More big tech earnings: Meta fell on spending guidance despite a strong quarter. The next reports show whether the market applies the same test across the sector.
