# Oil climbs and gold breaks $4,000.

Causa, Edition 002. Friday 23 October 2026. Intraday, 15:30 New York.

Talk of new strikes on Iran pushed Brent to a six-month high and pulled the Dow lower. Gold fell below $4,000, which puts Thursday's gold explanation on the edge of failing its own test.

## Update, Saturday 24 October 2026, after Friday's close

At the close, spot gold was at $3,994.90 and the 10-year yield at 4.988%, both under the lines set on Thursday, so F-004 was marked triggered on the Scorecard. Gold futures closed just above $4,000, at $4,007.90. We rule on the spot price the call was written against, and the original file stays online unchanged. Brent settled at $116.72, up 3.1% on the day. The Dow closed down 1.2% at 52,215.16, a little deeper than the 1.1% fall we reported at 15:30. The S&P 500 fell 0.5% to 7,623.68 and the Nasdaq 0.2% to 25,955.34. (Sources: [Yahoo Finance](https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/%5EDJI/history/))

## Update, Tuesday 27 October 2026, correction, 27 October

We were wrong to mark F-004 triggered. We used a market quote of 4.988% for the 10-year yield. Our method rules on the US Treasury’s daily yield, which was 5.00% on 23 October, and 5.00% is not below the line. F-004 is open again until 6 November, and the change is logged on our corrections page. (Sources: [Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, FRED](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/DGS10))

## What moved markets on Friday 23 October 2026, and why

December Brent settled at $116.72, a six-month high, after reports that the US and Israel are weighing new strikes on Iran after the US midterm elections. Airlines fell more than 4%, and the Dow was down about 1.1% by mid-afternoon. (Sources: [Yahoo Finance](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/live/stock-market-today-friday-october-23-dow-sp-500-nasdaq-tesla-meta-093000521.html), [TheStreet](https://www.thestreet.com/stock-market-today/stock-market-today-dow-jones-sp-500-nasdaq-updates-oct-23-2026))

Thursday’s close was weaker than our 11:00 snapshot. The Nasdaq closed down 2.6%, its worst day since June, and the 10-year Treasury yield fell to 4.955%, below 5% for the first time in a month. The larger fall in yields supports our Thursday reading of haven demand for Treasuries. Gold traded below $4,000, which puts one of our calls at its invalidation level. On Thursday we wrote that our gold explanation fails if gold closes below $4,000 on a day the 10-year closes below 5%. Both conditions held this afternoon. If they hold at the close, the Scorecard marks the call triggered, and the original file stays online unchanged. ## Cause Files

### [Brent tops $116 on reports of planned strikes on Iran](https://causamarkets.com/cause/oil-prices-a-wider-war/)

Brent crude +3.0% to $116.57. Evidence grade A.

Brent rose for a third straight week on reports that the US and Israel are weighing new strikes on Iran after the US midterms. No supply has been lost; the move is a premium for the risk of a wider war.

Wrong if: Our read is that oil now prices a wider war, not a passing scare. If Brent closes below $108, where it traded before Wednesday's Shaybah strike, on any session by 6 November, the market has judged the escalation risk overdone and this file overstated it. (F-006, deadline 6 November 2026)

### [Gold breaks $4,000, and our explanation is failing its test](https://causamarkets.com/cause/gold-breaks-4000/)

Gold −0.7% to $3,996. Evidence grade C.

Gold fell below $4,000 on a day Treasury yields stayed below 5%, the condition we set for Thursday’s rate explanation to fail. Our best explanation now is forced selling by investors covering losses elsewhere. The grade stays C.

Wrong if: If forced selling is the cause, gold should stop falling once stocks calm down. If gold closes below $3,900 on a day the Nasdaq closes above 26,000, by 13 November, the selling is not coming from the stock rout and this file is wrong. (F-007, deadline 13 November 2026)

### [Oil pulls the Dow down while chips steady](https://causamarkets.com/cause/oil-pulls-the-dow-down/)

US stocks Dow −1.1% to 52,269. Evidence grade B.

Selling rotated from chips to the broader market. Airlines fell on fuel costs, American Express on job cuts and a revenue miss, and Verizon on reports about SpaceX. Chips stabilised after Thursday’s worst Nasdaq session since June.

Wrong if: Our read is that rising oil is now the main weight on stocks, alongside AI doubts. If the S&P 500 closes above 7,757.17, its level before Meta reported, on any session by 6 November while Brent is still above $112, oil is not holding stocks back and this file is wrong. (F-008, deadline 6 November 2026)

## What we are watching

- 27 and 28 October, Federal Reserve meeting: Bets on a hike next week have faded to about 5%, with December still the live meeting. Oil at $116 is the reason that could change.
- 28 and 29 October, Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon report, plus GDP and PCE inflation: The AI spending question comes back in full, on the same days as the inflation figure the Fed watches most closely.
- 3 November onward, US midterms and the reported strike plans: Oil is pricing strikes reported for after the vote. Either the plans move ahead or the premium starts to leak out.
