ObservedAlphabet closed at $321.89 on Wednesday and traded at $291.85 after its results, down 9.3%. Microsoft rose about 3% after hours. In the regular session the Nasdaq Composite added 0.27% to 26,549.85.12
ReportedMicrosoft reported revenue of $92.3 billion, up 19%, and adjusted earnings of $4.89 a share against an estimate of about $4.72. Azure revenue grew 48% to $33.17 billion, above guidance of about 45%, and the company guided Azure growth of 49% to 50% for the current quarter. Free cash flow was $18.6 billion after $45.2 billion of capital spending including finance leases.134
ReportedAlphabet’s revenue rose 25% to $127.6 billion and earnings were $2.12 a share; both missed estimates. Google Cloud revenue grew 103% to $30.7 billion. Capital spending was $51.4 billion in the quarter, free cash flow was negative $9.1 billion for a second straight quarter, and the company raised $28.7 billion in notes and $12.4 billion from selling stock. It kept 2026 spending guidance at $195 billion to $205 billion and expects 2027 spending to increase significantly.13
Our readOur read is that the market has started to price AI spending by whether cash flow covers it. Both companies beat on cloud growth, and Alphabet’s was the faster of the two, yet the reactions went in opposite directions. The clearest difference is funding: Microsoft paid for its build from operations, while Alphabet borrowed and sold shares to cover a cash shortfall. Amazon reports tonight and will be judged on the same measure.13
Desk noteF-014 fails if the Nasdaq closes below 26,000 by Friday on a day the 10-year yield closes below 5.10%. The index closed 2.1% above that line on Wednesday, before Alphabet’s results.2
This is not a call that Alphabet’s AI business is failing. Its cloud unit more than doubled revenue; the question is whether investors pay for that growth while it consumes cash.
The chart
What would prove us wrong
Our read is that investors are marking Alphabet down for funding AI with borrowing rather than cash. If Alphabet closes above $321.89, its close before the results, by 6 November, the market has looked past the cash shortfall and this file is wrong.
