ObservedBy 15:32 in New York the Dow was down 1.13% at 52,269, the S&P 500 was down 0.46% at 7,628 and the Nasdaq was down just 0.14% at 25,972. On Thursday the order had been reversed: the Nasdaq fell 2.6% while the Dow was flat.12
ReportedOil was the largest drag. United, Delta and American each fell more than 4% as fuel costs climbed. The University of Michigan’s final October survey put five-year inflation expectations at 3.5%, up from 3.4% in September, which keeps pressure on the Fed.13
ReportedCompany news added to the losses. American Express fell about 3% after saying it will cut roughly 5% of its workforce and reporting revenue of $14.5 billion against $14.8 billion expected, even as it beat on profit. Verizon fell 4.6% early on reports that SpaceX is seeking access to about 80,000 US cell sites.134
ObservedChip stocks stabilised, with Nvidia and AMD edging higher after Thursday’s 6.7% fall in the semiconductor index, which left it down 15% for October. Cybersecurity stocks rose sharply, with Palo Alto Networks and Cloudflare both up more than 7%.14
This is not the end of the AI selloff. Chips paused for one session, and the spending question returns with Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon next week.
The chart
What would prove us wrong
Our read is that rising oil is now the main weight on stocks, alongside AI doubts. If the S&P 500 closes above 7,757.17, its level before Meta reported, on any session by 6 November while Brent is still above $112, oil is not holding stocks back and this file is wrong.
S&P 500 closes above 7,757.17, and on the same session Brent closes above $112.00
