ObservedDecember Brent settled at $116.72 a barrel on Friday, a six-month high, and US crude closed just above $103. Investing.com's record shows Brent at $116.57 in later trading, up 3.0% on the day after a 4.0% rise to $113.17 on Thursday. From last Friday's close of $109.86, that is a rise of about 6%, and Trading Economics counts it as the third weekly gain in a row.123
ReportedFriday's push came from reports that the US and Israel are considering further strikes on Iran after the early November midterm elections. TheStreet, Trading Economics and Yahoo Finance all tied the rise to that reporting.345
ReportedThe attacks behind Thursday’s rise continued. Houthi forces claimed responsibility for strikes on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea port of Yanbu, following Wednesday’s deadly drone strike near the Shaybah oilfield.36
Our readThere is no shortage. Trading Economics notes that crude exports from the Gulf have recovered close to prewar levels. The price is rising on the risk of losing supply, and the cost is already reaching fuel-intensive companies: United, Delta and American each fell more than 4%.13
This is not a supply shortage. Gulf exports are near prewar levels, and Saudi output was unaffected by this week's attacks.
The chart
What would prove us wrong
Our read is that oil now prices a wider war, not a passing scare. If Brent closes below $108, where it traded before Wednesday's Shaybah strike, on any session by 6 November, the market has judged the escalation risk overdone and this file overstated it.
Brent closes below $108.00
