Why did gold fall on Friday 23 October 2026?

Gold fell below $4,000 on a day Treasury yields stayed below 5%, the condition we set for Thursday’s rate explanation to fail. Our best explanation now is forced selling by investors covering losses elsewhere. The grade stays C.

  1. What happened
    Hedge funds take heavy losses
Their worst day since the 2020 pandemic rout, per TheStreet.
  2. Then
    Investors raise cash fast
Leveraged crypto bets were cut too, about $431m in a day.
  3. Then
    Liquid assets get sold
Gold falls even as yields drop, which the rate explanation cannot account for.
  4. What moved
    Gold −0.7%
    $3,995.50 at 15:25 New York.

The evidence

Observed prices and times from market data Reported what named sources say Our read the desk's interpretation Desk note our method and record

ObservedGold was at $3,995.50 an ounce at 15:25 New York time, down $27.80 on the day, in a range of $3,975.10 to $4,040.20. It opened at its lowest level since 29 July and is down about 8% over the past month.12

Desk noteOn Thursday we explained gold's fall through the rate path and graded it C. We wrote that the explanation fails if gold closes below $4,000 on a day the 10-year yield closes below 5.00%. The 10-year was near 4.96% on Friday. If gold stays below $4,000 into the close, our explanation has failed its own test.13

Our readForced selling fits better. TheStreet reported that hedge funds had their worst day since the pandemic rout of 2020, and crypto markets saw about $431 million of leveraged long bets liquidated in a day. Investors who need cash quickly sell their most liquid holdings, and gold is among the deepest markets.45

Our readRates are not irrelevant. The dollar index is firm near 101.6, and the Fed is still expected to raise rates by the end of the year, with a hold priced for next week's meeting. But neither of those changed enough on Friday to explain a break below $4,000.26

This is not proof that gold has lost its role as a haven. Two days of selling during a stock rout say more about who needed cash than about long-term demand.

What would prove us wrong

WRONG IF

If forced selling is the cause, gold should stop falling once stocks calm down. If gold closes below $3,900 on a day the Nasdaq closes above 26,000, by 13 November, the selling is not coming from the stock rout and this file is wrong.

Gold closes below $3,900, and on the same session Nasdaq closes above 26,000
