The evidence
Observed prices and times from market data Reported what named sources say Our read the desk's interpretation Desk note our method and record
ObservedDecember gold settled at $3,898.90, down 3.3%, and spot gold closed at $3,875.19. Silver fell 5.86% to $49.14. The dollar index slipped 0.12% and the 10-year Treasury yield fell 4 basis points, so neither a stronger dollar nor higher yields explains the move.12
ReportedDana Samuelson of American Gold Exchange described the fall as collateral damage from a liquidity-driven flight to safety, with investors selling gold to cover losses in stocks, and said the break below July’s support at $3,975 sped it up. Michael Armbruster of Altavest said that when stocks drop hard, people look for liquidity, and Commerzbank said margin-call selling probably played a part.23
ReportedMarkets put the chance of a Fed rate rise this year at between 70% and 76% after two Fed presidents called for more increases. Samer Hasn of XS.com said economic strength may keep rates and yields high enough to prevent a lasting recovery in gold.123
Our readOur read is that Friday’s fall was forced selling, not a change in the case for holding gold. Gold fell while the dollar and Treasury yields both moved in its favour, and it fell hardest on the day stocks fell hardest. Selling of that kind tends to stop when the losses that caused it stop.13
Desk noteF-004 failed on this close: spot gold finished below $4,000 with the Treasury 10-year yield at 4.94%. F-007 and F-011 hold for now, because their second conditions were not met on the same day: the Nasdaq closed below 26,000 and the S&P 500 below 7,600.124
This is not a call that gold has bottomed. Forced selling can run for several sessions, and a December rate rise would weigh on gold whatever caused Friday’s fall.
Other explanations we weighed
- Still live
Rising odds of a Fed rate rise
Futures put a December rise at about 76% after Musalem and Logan spoke, and higher rates raise the cost of holding gold. But the 10-year yield fell on Friday, so the comments did not move bonds the way gold moved.1
- Ruled out
Easing tension in the Gulf reduced demand for a haven
Tankers were hit near Hormuz on Friday and Brent rose 2.37%, so the risk of war rose on the day gold fell.15
The chart
What would prove us wrong
Our read is that investors sold gold to raise cash during the tech rout. If spot gold closes below $3,800 on a day the S&P 500 closes above 7,600, by 13 November, gold is falling for reasons of its own while stocks recover, and this file is wrong.
Gold closes below $3,800, and on the same session S&P 500 closes above 7,600
