ObservedSpot gold was at $4,018.50 an ounce at 14:33 New York, up 0.59%, after touching $3,975 on Friday, its lowest since 20 July, at the end of its steepest weekly fall in more than four months. COMEX futures were up 0.63% at $4,033.123
ReportedKitco tied the early rebound to oil: Brent’s fall eased worries that energy prices would push the Federal Reserve to raise rates again. Futures put the chance of a hike on Wednesday near 10%, and Kitco puts the odds of at least one rise by December near 80%. The afternoon argues against that explanation: oil recovered most of its fall, and gold kept its gain.245
Our readThat supports Friday’s reading in F-007: gold fell because funds sold liquid assets to cover losses in a stock rout, and it should stabilise once stocks do. The Nasdaq rose about 1% and gold stopped falling. A single session is not conclusive; F-007 fails if gold closes below $3,900 on a day the Nasdaq closes above 26,000, by 13 November.23
This is not a return of gold’s safe-haven bid. Gold rose on a calm day, not a frightened one.
The chart
What would prove us wrong
If forced selling was the cause, gold should not make new lows while stocks hold up. If spot gold closes below Friday’s low of $3,975 on a day the S&P 500 closes above 7,600, by 6 November, the selling is not about the stock market and this file is wrong.
Gold closes below $3,975, and on the same session S&P 500 closes above 7,600
