The evidence
Observed prices and times from market data Reported what named sources say Our read the desk's interpretation Desk note our method and record
ObservedGold was at $4,062.30 an ounce at 10:54 New York time, down $78 on the day. It has fallen about 4.8% over the past month and sits well below its January record of $5,608.12
Our readThe rate explanation runs as follows. The Fed is in a hiking cycle, the 10-year yield has spent weeks above 5%, and the dollar index is firm near 101.6. Gold pays no yield, so every expected hike raises the cost of holding it. Oil at $111 strengthens the case for further hikes.345
Our readThe session itself argues against it. The 10-year yield fell about 8 basis points, which should have supported gold. A second explanation is forced selling, where investors sell profitable positions to cover losses in stocks and crypto. The available reporting does not confirm it.67
This is not a collapse in demand for gold as a haven. One day of selling during a shock says little about long-term buying.
The chart
What would prove us wrong
If gold closes below $4,000 on a day when the 10-year yield closes below 5.00%, falling rates are not rescuing it, and the rate explanation fails. Deadline 6 November.
Gold closes below $4,000, and on the same session US 10-year closes below 5.00%
