Why did Brent crude fall on Monday 26 October 2026?

Brent fell as much as 2.3% as Saudi Arabia’s defence minister led talks in Tehran, then recovered most of the loss when no agreement emerged. Reports of a 6% fall compared two different contracts. The war premium remains in the price.

The evidence

Observed prices and times from market data Reported what named sources say Our read the desk's interpretation Desk note our method and record

ObservedDecember Brent was at $115.95 a barrel at 14:12 New York, down 0.66% on the day, after trading as low as $114.00 in the morning. Reuters had it at $114.70, down 1.7%, at 10:37. US crude was down 1.33% at $101.90.1234

ReportedThe morning fall followed a surprise visit to Tehran by Saudi Arabia’s defence minister, Prince Khalid bin Salman, at the head of a Makkah pact delegation with Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Turkey’s intelligence chief, Ibrahim Kalin. Iran said President Masoud Pezeshkian joined the meeting, and Iranian state media said the parties agreed to keep talking. Qatari mediators had been in Tehran on Sunday, in coordination with Washington. Trump told reporters there would not be a strike that day.356

ReportedPrices recovered as no agreement emerged. Iran says it will not negotiate with Washington until its demands are met, and the Houthis said they struck pumping stations on Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline over the weekend. Riyadh reported interceptions and has not confirmed damage, and flows are unchanged, but the risk premium remains. John Evans of PVM Oil Associates told Reuters that dips toward last week’s lows would attract buyers, which is what happened.37

ObservedSeveral outlets reported a 6% fall to about $110. That compares the January contract with December’s Friday settlement of $116.72. Most price services switched their Brent quote to January on 25 October. January settled at $111.70 on Friday and was at $110.74 on Monday, down 0.86%.289

Desk noteThe switch affects our record. Five of our open calls name Brent, and they were written against December, which expires on 30 October. Until then we rule them on December. After it, we use January and move each line by the gap between the two contracts at December’s expiry, so a change of contract cannot decide a test. Our own automatic feed switched on Monday, so any crossing it shows now goes to the desk before a ruling.29

This is not a sign that the war premium is fading. The talks produced no agreement, and December Brent is still within about a dollar of Friday’s six-month high.

What would prove us wrong

WRONG IF

Our read is that the market heard the talks but does not yet believe them, so the war premium stays. If traders start pricing a settlement, the premium will drain. If US crude closes below $97, where it stood before last Wednesday’s strike near Shaybah, on any session by 3 November, election day, the market has begun to bet on a deal and this file misread it. We test on US crude because its front month does not change before the deadline.
