Why did Brent crude fall on Tuesday 27 October 2026?

Brent slipped again after Iran’s security council chief met Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani officials and all four agreed to keep talking. A Houthi claim of a missile hit on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery is unconfirmed, and the physical market remains tight.

The evidence

Observed prices and times from market data Reported what named sources say Our read the desk's interpretation Desk note our method and record

ObservedDecember Brent was at $114.81 a barrel at 09:11 New York, down $1.00 or 0.86%, and US crude was at $100.02 at about 14:00, down 1.71%. Refiners fell with crude: Valero was down 7.8% at midday, and Marathon Petroleum and Phillips 66 about 6%.123

ReportedReuters tied the fall to the talks in Tehran. Iran’s security council chief met Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani representatives, and the four countries agreed to keep talking. Sugandha Sachdeva of SS WealthStreet described profit-taking after Brent rose above $117 last week, its highest since April.14

ReportedThe Houthis said they hit Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery with a ballistic missile and caused large fires. Saudi authorities had not commented, and the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted four drones and three ballistic missiles launched toward the kingdom. No damage or loss of output has been confirmed.5

Our readOur read is that the market is trimming a risk premium on diplomacy while the physical market stays tight. ANZ Research reported that Gulf crude exports fell for a fourth straight week, Strait of Hormuz flows are about 60% of normal and distillate stocks are nearly 5% below their five-year average. Bjarne Schieldrop of SEB said there is a significant risk premium in crude prices. Together that points to a gradual decline in the premium while talks continue.14

Desk noteOur Brent calls are ruled on the December contract until it expires on Friday 30 October. F-001 tests whether Saudi Arabia reports lost production at a field; a refinery outage at Ras Tanura would not meet that test as written.56

This is not a supply shock. No Saudi output loss has been confirmed, and Brent remains near its highest level since April.

What would prove us wrong

WRONG IF

Our read is that the Ras Tanura claim is a risk event, not a supply event. If Saudi Aramco or the Saudi government confirms damage that reduced output at Ras Tanura by 6 November, the attack was a supply event and this file understated it.

Resolved by an editor on this evidence: An official Saudi Aramco or Saudi government statement confirming lost output at Ras Tanura.
