ObservedBrent futures settled at $113.88 a barrel on Tuesday, down $1.93 or 1.67%, and US crude settled at $99.90, down 1.83%. Energy was the weakest S&P 500 sector. Brent traded above $115 in Asia on Wednesday, up about 1.3%.123
ReportedIran’s security council chief, Mohsen Rezaei, met Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Tuesday, a day after talks in Tehran with Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani officials. Iranian state media said the four countries agreed to keep talking, and Khamenei stressed that Iran’s conditions for ending the war must be upheld.13
ReportedThe supply risk has not eased. The Washington Institute for Near East Policy recorded more attacks on commercial shipping around the Strait of Hormuz in October than in any month since it began tracking them in 2017, and UBS raised its Brent forecast to about $110 through the end of 2026, from $100. Saudi authorities have not confirmed the Houthi claim of a strike on Ras Tanura.13
Our readOur read is that oil, more than the labour market, is setting the Fed’s path. Markets price about a 73% chance of a hike in December even though payrolls grew by only 29,000 in September and unemployment rose to 4.2%. A weakening jobs market would normally argue for a pause, so that pricing makes sense only if energy-driven inflation is the Fed’s main concern. A hold today is close to certain; the signal is whether the statement links further hikes to energy prices. While Brent stays above $110, we expect the 10-year yield to hold near 5%.24
Desk noteOur Brent calls are ruled on the December contract until it expires on Friday 30 October. From then, each Brent line moves to the January contract, adjusted by the gap between the two contracts at expiry. F-006 fails on a Brent close below $108 by 6 November; Tuesday’s settlement was 5.4% above that line.15
This is not a call on today’s Fed decision, which markets treat as close to certain. It is a call on what keeps long-term US yields near 5%.
The chart
What would prove us wrong
Our read is that oil, not the labour market, is keeping the Fed on a hiking path. If the 10-year yield closes below 4.85% on a day Brent closes above $110, by 13 November, bond markets have stopped pricing oil-driven hikes and this file is wrong.
US 10-year closes below 4.85%, and on the same session Brent closes above $110.00
