The evidence
Observed prices and times from market data Reported what named sources say Our read the desk's interpretation Desk note our method and record
ObservedThe Nasdaq Composite closed up 308.43 points, or 1.18%, at 26,477.81. The S&P 500 rose 0.60% to 7,722.60 and the Dow added 0.03% to 52,377.57. Technology was the strongest S&P 500 sector and energy the weakest; AMD rose 5.5% and the Russell 2000 gained 1.2%.12
ReportedReuters attributed the gains to interest in the details of Anthropic’s planned listing, which lifted chip stocks for a third straight session. The filing disclosed about $430 billion of existing computing commitments, and TheStreet reported a separate SpaceX computing contract worth up to $120.5 billion.134
ObservedBoeing fell 10.7%, its worst day in more than 18 months, after saying it will miss its 737 production and delivery targets this year. UPS rose 5.8% after raising its annual forecasts, and Meta fell 1.6% after its record $97.5 billion share sale.1
Our readOur read is that the chip rally now depends on the buyers confirming the spending. The Philadelphia semiconductor index is up 62.1% this year against 12.8% for the S&P 500, yet remains more than 20% below its 22 June record, so the sector is extended against the market without being at a peak. Microsoft has guided Azure growth of about 45% at constant currency, and Alphabet’s cloud revenue grew 82% in the second quarter. Cloud growth at or above those rates would support the case; a slowdown with spending still rising would undercut it.15
Desk noteF-010 held: it would have failed on a Nasdaq close below 25,955.34 by 27 October, and the index closed 2.0% above that line. F-002 is the next Nasdaq call due. It fails on a close above 26,702.86 by Friday while Brent is above $108, and the index is 0.8% short.1
This is not a forecast of Microsoft’s or Alphabet’s results. It is a test of whether the market keeps paying for AI spending once those results are out.
The chart
What would prove us wrong
Our read is that the rally rests on AI spending that Microsoft and Alphabet will confirm. If the Nasdaq closes below 26,000 on a day the 10-year yield closes below 5.10%, by Friday 30 October, the results have not supported the spending case and this file is wrong.
Nasdaq closes below 26,000, and on the same session US 10-year closes below 5.10%
